About the author: Dave CuthbertGreetings and welcome! Thanks for taking the time to visit.
Statistics about me: I'm an electrical/software engineer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (in the northeast corner of the US), working at Seagate Research. I received my Master of Science degree at Carnegie Mellon, and my Bachelor of Science degree from Caltech in 1996. I am originally from the San Diego area (Escondido, to be precise), where my parents -- Dave and Kimiko -- still reside; was born in December 1973; am half Japanese; have brown hair and eyes; am 183 cm (6 feet) tall, weigh about 84 kg (185 lbs), and have an average body temperature of 37°C (98.6°F).
My professional interests include magnetic recording systems, algorithms for the automated design of chips, and architecting software projects. I also follow developments in the Python, C++, and Tcl programming languages rather closely; other languages that I use include C, SKILL, and PostScript.
Personal interests -- in alphabetical order -- include Australia (I have been fascinated by the people and the land for some time now. Never been there, but this will change on June 8th!), ballroom dancing (especially waltzes and the like), biology, concerts (classical and pops), engineering (see above), museums, musicals (most recently seen: Les Miserables (touring, Pittsburgh), Beauty and the Beast (Los Angeles), and Cats (touring, Los Angeles)), and theatre.
You can sometimes get to know a person by the friends he keeps. I don't know what kind of impression you'll get about me, but here are a few people I have been known to hang out with:
- Myke, my brother at Harvard, studying music. Weird list of interests, from minimalist music to HTML and Perl. Has been spotted around Italy.
- People from Carnegie Mellon:
- Adrian, now in the Big Apple.
- Amy, who left icy New England to come to CMU in Pittsburgh, and then left Pittsburgh (after getting her M.S.) for HP in sunny California.
- Jason, a.k.a. Maddog, one of the weirder people I know.
- Jeff, now in Maryland. Be glad he's on our side; he can organize just about anything, probably including a rebellion or two.
- Josh, who, whether he knows it or not, is going to stay for his Ph.D.
- Meg, who is always a target for Josh's jokes.
- P. D., who left sunny Delhi to come to CMU in Pittsburgh, and then left Pittsburgh (after getting his Ph.D.) for Seagate in icy Minneapolis.
- Winnie, who may or may not stay for her Ph.D. That lab report she mentions in her update page was assigned by me.
- Wipul, inventor of the Wipul Effect, who's now at IBM in San Jose.
- People from Caltech:
- Becky, the girl who took a date to the hospital, soon to be a doctor in her own right, currently at the University of Chicago.
- Clifton, an entirely too cheery electrical engineer, who also goes by the alias Kuri
- Donna, yet another doctor-to-be, studying at Yale. Carries a strange set of fortune cookies around. Jeff's wife.
- Fong, who ended up in the Bay Area after studying mechanical engineering at Stanford.
- Jeff, one of my roommates and a fellow electrical engineer, now an engineering droid at Intel, making sure that Dr. Moore's overquoted law stays true on Merced. Donna's husband.
- Helen, yet another fellow EE. Headed up north to UCSB with Tal, Ed, and Chuck.
- Henry, one of the few artsy guys who dared to set foot at Tech.
- Shirles, now at Stanford, and -- in recent news -- has switched from chemistry to computer science.
- Steve, another one of my roommates, also at Chicago, but taking a lot longer since he's going for an M.D./Ph.D. and is Cr.Az.y. The scary part is that it is probably fairly easy for him. :-)
- Tal, obsession-of-the-minute boy, at UCSB. Has crossed over to the dark side and hangs out with electrical engineers now.
- Tamara, my terrific girlfriend, following in the footsteps of Dr. Frankenstein. Now at Medrad.
- Wayne, the second half of the Kuri-Archon duo, and an amazing CorelDRAW! wizard.
- People from San Diego:
- Carrié, now teaching a gang of rowdy high schoolers back home.
- Cindy, who decided that Washington and Whitworth were a bit too cold and settled down with Jim back in SD.
- Heidi, practicing to be the next Ally McBeal, now at a law firm in San Diego.
- Jason, yet another doctor-to-be (how is it I know so many?) at UPenn.
- Jon, the perpetual motion man. Last seen heading toward Russia.
- Marcia, always doing something new. Wouldn't be surprised to get a call from her from Istanbul some random day, but last spotted in downtown San Diego.
- Maya, an amazing artist, following her dreams in Greenwich Village.
